Copy the first n ones, which are outdated and paste at the end of the batch delete command: git branch -D 1_branch 2_branch. This will delete the selected ones only, so you have more control over the process.

Web@Thayne: this question is old, but the Git folks have finally addressed the problem: for-each-ref now supports all the branch selectors like --merged and git branch and git tag are now actually implemented in terms of git for-each-ref itself, at least for the list-existing cases. (Creating new branches and tags is not, and should not be, part of for-each-ref.)
